This program, started two years ago, is designed to send teachers from schools in District 5790 in Texas to Mexico for three to four weeks during the summer to teach English to Mexican students of any age.
The overall purpose of this program is: To promote international goodwill and understanding through this cultural exchange between our volunteer teachers and the Mexican students and Rotarians.
The specific objectives are:
We have set some tentative dates for the program. These are somewhat flexible and can be adapted to fit their needs. They were set up however based on the suggestions of Rotary Clubs in Mexico and on those of our teachers:
Teachers leave : July 6th or 7th Registration : July 7th and 8th Classes Begin : July 11th Classes End : July 29th (3 weeks) or Aug. 5th (4 weeks) Teachers return : July 30th or Aug. 6thThe terms will be the same as the last two years. Each teacher will be sponsored by a Rotary Club in our District. That Club will provide round trip transportation for the teacher. If you can help get free or discounted air fares please do. In some cases such as with some border cities, the teachers might be reimbursed for mileage since they can drive to their destination (the Rotarians will provide for safe parking on either side of the border).
The Rotary Clubs in Mexico will provide room, board and local transportation for the teachers. They will also find the students, obtain suitable classrooms and involve the teachers in the local culture. The teachers will visit the Rotary Club meetings as well.
The teachers are all volunteers and there is no charge for the students to take the course. The teachers provide the teaching materials and use "English As A Second Language" curriculum.
The classes can be set up according to size, type of students and/or existing language ability. Last year the Cozumel Club had two classes each of Intermediate and Advanced. They could be divided into other groupings as needed. Two teachers can teach roughly a total of 180 students in six classes. It is hoped that our teachers would also have the opportunity to learn Spanish, perhaps from Mexican English teachers who are also students.
The teachers may be either male or female, Rotarian or non-Rotarian, of any age or race. We will send their applications to the Mexican Rotary Clubs in advance. We prefer that at least two teachers go together to any one area. They may be put up in homes of Rotarians or in other suitable accommodations.
The teachers should be able to teach English using the ESL curriculum. They do not have to speak Spanish but it would certainly be helpful. Most of all, they need to be ambassadors of our communities, our country and of Rotary.
We presently have opportunities in Cozumel, Playa Del Carmen, Irapuato, Matamoros, San Luis Potosi, Nuevo Laredo, Vitctoria, Reynosa and Garza Garcia/Monterrey.
