What’s new for the 2024 Hyundai Tucson?
For 2024, the Tucson features a bunch of finicky little changes across the lineup, such as steering wheel haptic feedback for the blind-spot monitors and active lane control. Some trims get new black headliner and interior pillar trim, and models with ambient lighting get an upgrade from 10- to 64-color. The upgraded 10.3-inch touchscreen is now available on the SEL Convenience configuration in gas-only models and is standard across the hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) lineup. Finally, the Tucson N Line ditches the 2.5-liter powertrain and moves to the 1.6-liter hybrid powertrain.
The Tucson stands out from the mundane crossover SUV crowd thanks to its origami-like creases and folds. A grille stitched like a puffer coat houses LED lighting hidden until awakened. The sculpted sides and daring exterior yield to a subdued cabin. The slab of a center stack is dominated both by its big touchscreen and its fingerprint-prone glossy trim. Highlighting the digital displays isn’t a bad choice, thanks to their clean, user-friendly interfaces.
The Tucson’s powertrain lineup starts with the base 2.5-liter inline-4, good for 187 hp, paired with a responsive 8-speed automatic transmission and standard front- or optional all-wheel drive. Next is a 226-hp 1.6-liter turbo-4 hybrid with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Regardless of powertrain, the Tucson’s suspension and steering are capable and responsive, though Sport mode is a notable improvement. The Tucson plug-in hybrid represents the most expensive powertrain option and the best, with 33 miles of electric range from its 13.8-kwh battery pack and rear motor. Combined with the 1.6-liter turbo-4, it generates 261 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
With generous space for four adults and almost 40 cubes for storage, the Tucson has grown into proportions nearing size-leaders such as the Chevy Equinox and Honda CR-V. Though the cabin’s digital displays shine, they cast shadows on the cheap plastic trim that prevent a knockout blow in the segment.
Every Tucson features automatic high beams, automatic emergency braking, and a new seatbelt reminder for every seat. Higher-end trims get steering support for the blind-spot monitoring system, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera system. Crash-test results are mixed, with the IIHS awarding the Tucson its highest honor but the NHTSA dinging AWD models for subpar driver-side protection.

The Tucson comes in three trim levels for the gas models, SE, SEL, and top-tier Limited. The entry-level Tucson SE costs $28,585, including destination, and has an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wired Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay. Automatic climate control and Bose audio are available, and upper trims come with a 10.3-inch touchscreen that reverts back to wired-only Apple CarPlay.
The $30,735 Tucson SEL offers the most compelling value—budget a couple grand more for the hybrid. Last year, the N Line was gas-only and this year moves to the hybrid model, joining the Blue, SEL Convenience, and Limited. The top-tier Tucson Plug-In Hybrid can reach upwards of $45,000.
